Praise for the first edition:

-- Science Books and Films
Multiple sclerosis strikes one in a thousand North Americans, usually in early adulthood, just as they are building careers and starting families. Because the disease involves the central nervous system, the effects are wide-ranging and difficult to predict.
Multiple Sclerosis is a fact-filled comprehensive guide to living with MS, supported by diagrams, case histories, a drug table and an extensive list of helpful books and organizations.
This updated edition features new drugs and therapies. Topics include:
- What MS is, and who suffers from it
- How MS is diagnosed as possible, probable or definite
- Why the disease affects different people in different ways
- Differences between relapsing-remitting MS and progressive MS
- Adapting homes, careers and lifestyles to cope with the disease
- Treatments currently available.
Combining current and authoritative medical advice and practical hands-on tips,
Multiple Sclerosis is an invaluable guide for anyone affected by this complex disease.

I attempted to read this medically authoritative book as if I was afflicted with MS, and I think I can project that every question I might ask is answered in the well-conceived and -written volume ... The book is written with great sensitivity to the realities of dealing with MS and gives straightforward information about outcomes and expectations. Of particular usefulness are sections on how to make changes to one's lifestyle that will minimize the disease's effects, on how to deal with the social impact of MS on families and friends, and on strategies for reconciling the consequences of the ailment in the workplace. In addition, the book features lists of useful drugs (useless therapies are debunked), an excellent glossary, and a listing of MS support organizations in the United States and Canada to which a patient can turn for additional resources.

This book provides a comprehensive source of information for patients with multiple sclerosis, their families, and people involved in their care. It provides medical advice and practical hands-on tips, and helps them to learn more about the disease. It helps to strike a balance between the interests and needs of the patients and their caregivers. The purpose is to help families experiencing multiple sclerosis learn more about the disease and its attendant problems such as diagnosis, available treatments, and future trends. It offers advice to strengthen coping skills and deal with the various issues in a positive, rewarding manner. These are worthy objectives and the book meets them. This book, according to the author, is intended mainly for anyone affected, directly or indirectly, by multiple sclerosis. I, however, feel that this book is helpful not only for the families experiencing multiple sclerosis, but also for the healthcare professionals who come in contact with these patients. The table of contents is adequate, dealing with almost all important issues of multiple sclerosis. This book, with its good print, easy to understand language, diagrams, case histories, drug table, resource information, and additional reading lists, is bound to make a favorable impression on its readers. This is an invaluable guide for anyone affected by multiple sclerosis. It provides good insight into the disease process and discusses available treatment in a lucid manner. The case histories, well illustrated simple diagrams, and the drug table are the highlights of this book. The emphasis on the clinical presentation and medical management of multiple sclerosis distinguishes this book from Kalb'sMultiple Sclerosis: A Guide for Families (Demos Medical Publishing, Inc, 1998).

OConnor, who has treated multiple sclerosis (MS) patients for over 15 years, presents an authoritative, reliable, up-to-date overview of this disease and its treatment. He discusses technical information in an understandable style; for instance, when describing the nervous system, he writes, Think of billions of interconnected electrical wires creating a system of linkages of unimaginable complexity. The human nervous system is exactly that. Besides being very readable, the book is up-to-date regarding the newest therapies (including alternative treatments) used to treat MS. OConnor explains how to cope with its symptoms (fatigue, numbness, shaking, tremors) and includes a drug chart, a glossary of terms, and a list of support organizations. Other titles on the topic, such as David Carroll and Jon Dudley Dormans Living Well with MS (LJ 5/15/93), are helpful but somewhat dated. OConnors is the ideal book for the newly diagnosed MS patient, family members, and other interested readers. Highly recommended for all general collections.Mary J. Nickum, Bozeman, MT
