What People Are Saying

Edward J. Khantzian
SCHOLARLY YET IMMENSELY HELPFUL AND PRACTICAL BOOK . . . covers all the bases, integrating how group therapy and twelve step programs help to access and transform the core vulnerabilities of addicted individuals. . . . BRILLIANTLY FOCUSES on how the relational and self regulatory problems of addicted individuals can be addressed and modified by informed clinical approaches and twelve step programs. . . . ASTUTELY INSTRUCTS us how group and twelve step programs can serve as correctives by replacing addictive behaviors with meaningful and transforming relationships. (Edward J. Khantzian, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Medical School at Tewksbury Hospital and the Cambridge Health Alliance)

Henry I. Spitz
Every so often a rare text comes along that possesses the qualities of being theoretically sound, clinically wise and easily readable. Philip Flores has written such a book. . . . A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION toward enriching our understanding of the interplay between psychological theory, neuroscience research and clinical group work with people struggling with problems of addiction. With his unique blend of scholarship and pragmatism, Dr. Flores provides the reader with A THOUGHTFUL AND WELL DOCUMENTED ROAD MAP for negotiating the notoriously challenging terrain of treating addicted individuals. This book is A 'MUST READ' for anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of the use of group therapy for substance abuse treatment. (Henry I. Spitz MD, DFAGPA, Director Group Psychotherapy Training Program, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York, & Distinguished Fellow, Americana Group Psychotherapy Association)

Molyn Leszcz
In this VERY CLEAR AND WELL-WRITTEN text book, DR. FLORES HAS SET THE STANDARD in his articulation of the way group therapy plays a pivotal role in the treatment of persons suffering from addictions. . . . Advances our understanding of the integration of addictions into mental health; psychology of the mind and biology of the brain; models of group therapy; 12-step approaches and leader led groups; scientific knowledge and clinical wisdom; and, the pivotal role that an understanding of attachment plays in effective group psychotherapy. . . . NEW CHAPTERS WRITTEN FOR THIS EDITION ARE OF GREAT VALUE: the first chapter on interpersonal neurobiology and addictions, is A MUST READ, not only for those who work in the area of addictions, but for psychotherapists in general, who are interested in understanding how the work that they do with their clients modifies their clients' brain as well as their clients' thinking. (Molyn Leszcz, MD, FRCPC, Psychiatrist-in-Chief, Mount Sinai Hospital, Professor and Head, Group Psychotherapy, Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto)

Marilyn Freimuth
THIS BOOK KEEPS GETTING BETTER! Flores has interwoven his in depth explorations into attachment theory and addiction to create a text that is rare to find: a practical guide to treatment that is theoretically grounded. After reading this book, practitioners will be able to PROVIDE MORE EFFECTIVE TREATMENT TO ADDICTED POPULATIONS because they will know what to do and why to do it. This is really five books in one. . . . Provides comprehensive readable overviews of the nature of addictions, group therapy, 12-step work and psychodynamic theory. At the same time he interweaves these topics to create a theoretically grounded practical guide to more effective addiction treatment. (Marilyn Freimuth, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Fielding Graduate University and author of Hidden Addictions)

Within the Wall of Denial or The Psychobiology of Mind Body Healing

Within the Wall of Denial: Conquering Addictive Behaviors

Author: Robert J Kearney

Denial is a natural process, a form of self-protection. It is a wall built layer by layer to shelter us from pain and frightful truths. It is a psychological defense that is as normal as flinching. Within the Wall of Denial shows how this valuable, instinctive reaction can become rigid and maladaptive. Retreat behind its protection can isolate people in their pain, alienate those around them, and facilitate the development of diseases, from addiction to heart disease. It precludes seeking professional help and thus blocks early diagnosis and treatment. It contributes to treatment failure and sets up the newly recovering addict to relapse. Those who suffer from such disorders retreat behind their wall of denial, and thus often seem unaware of the chaos around them. They behave as if there is no problem; they minimize it, make excuses, or just seem unwilling or unable to take effective action. The people who love and depend on them begin to need protection; they build walls of their own. Their "enabling" or "co-dependent" behavior is also addressed in this book. Kearney presents a fresh perspective on the nature and function of denial. He describes each layer in the wall of denial, including denial of fact, implications, change, and finally denial of feelings, in language so remarkably clear that the reader can quickly realize what it is like to be on either side. He then offers an innovative approach for working with people caught in denial that bridges the contrasting techniques of confrontation and support. Empathic and tough, Kearney demonstrates how to gain clients' trust so that the wall of denial can be dismantled layer by layer.

Multiple Sclerosis or Aromatherapy Solutions

Multiple Sclerosis: The Facts You Need

Author: Paul OConnor

Praise for the first edition:

"Well-conceived and written volume.... Great sensitivity to the realities of dealing with MS and gives straightforward information about outcomes and expectations."

-- Science Books and Films

Multiple sclerosis strikes one in a thousand North Americans, usually in early adulthood, just as they are building careers and starting families. Because the disease involves the central nervous system, the effects are wide-ranging and difficult to predict.

Multiple Sclerosis is a fact-filled comprehensive guide to living with MS, supported by diagrams, case histories, a drug table and an extensive list of helpful books and organizations.

This updated edition features new drugs and therapies. Topics include:

  • What MS is, and who suffers from it

  • How MS is diagnosed as possible, probable or definite

  • Why the disease affects different people in different ways

  • Differences between relapsing-remitting MS and progressive MS

  • Adapting homes, careers and lifestyles to cope with the disease

  • Treatments currently available.

Combining current and authoritative medical advice and practical hands-on tips, Multiple Sclerosis is an invaluable guide for anyone affected by this complex disease.

Science Books and Films - Jeffrey S. Fedan

I attempted to read this medically authoritative book as if I was afflicted with MS, and I think I can project that every question I might ask is answered in the well-conceived and -written volume ... The book is written with great sensitivity to the realities of dealing with MS and gives straightforward information about outcomes and expectations. Of particular usefulness are sections on how to make changes to one's lifestyle that will minimize the disease's effects, on how to deal with the social impact of MS on families and friends, and on strategies for reconciling the consequences of the ailment in the workplace. In addition, the book features lists of useful drugs (useless therapies are debunked), an excellent glossary, and a listing of MS support organizations in the United States and Canada to which a patient can turn for additional resources.

Vijaya K. Patil

This book provides a comprehensive source of information for patients with multiple sclerosis, their families, and people involved in their care. It provides medical advice and practical hands-on tips, and helps them to learn more about the disease. It helps to strike a balance between the interests and needs of the patients and their caregivers. The purpose is to help families experiencing multiple sclerosis learn more about the disease and its attendant problems such as diagnosis, available treatments, and future trends. It offers advice to strengthen coping skills and deal with the various issues in a positive, rewarding manner. These are worthy objectives and the book meets them. This book, according to the author, is intended mainly for anyone affected, directly or indirectly, by multiple sclerosis. I, however, feel that this book is helpful not only for the families experiencing multiple sclerosis, but also for the healthcare professionals who come in contact with these patients. The table of contents is adequate, dealing with almost all important issues of multiple sclerosis. This book, with its good print, easy to understand language, diagrams, case histories, drug table, resource information, and additional reading lists, is bound to make a favorable impression on its readers. This is an invaluable guide for anyone affected by multiple sclerosis. It provides good insight into the disease process and discusses available treatment in a lucid manner. The case histories, well illustrated simple diagrams, and the drug table are the highlights of this book. The emphasis on the clinical presentation and medical management of multiple sclerosis distinguishes this book from Kalb'sMultiple Sclerosis: A Guide for Families (Demos Medical Publishing, Inc, 1998).

Library Journal

OConnor, who has treated multiple sclerosis (MS) patients for over 15 years, presents an authoritative, reliable, up-to-date overview of this disease and its treatment. He discusses technical information in an understandable style; for instance, when describing the nervous system, he writes, Think of billions of interconnected electrical wires creating a system of linkages of unimaginable complexity. The human nervous system is exactly that. Besides being very readable, the book is up-to-date regarding the newest therapies (including alternative treatments) used to treat MS. OConnor explains how to cope with its symptoms (fatigue, numbness, shaking, tremors) and includes a drug chart, a glossary of terms, and a list of support organizations. Other titles on the topic, such as David Carroll and Jon Dudley Dormans Living Well with MS (LJ 5/15/93), are helpful but somewhat dated. OConnors is the ideal book for the newly diagnosed MS patient, family members, and other interested readers. Highly recommended for all general collections.Mary J. Nickum, Bozeman, MT

Constructive Awareness or The Art of Midlife

Constructive Awareness: Alexander Technique and the Spiritual Quest

Author: Daniel McGowan

Here is water in the desert of theory for many seekers - how to use the body's "here-and-now" to enhance spiritual awareness. McGowan shows how a proper head-neck-back relationship heightens our moment-to-moment awareness of the unity of mind-body-world, developing a pain-free body as a springboard for attaining high spiritual aspirations. The result is a solid, vitalizing basis for combining inner freedom and effective altruistic action in the everyday world.

The Art of Midlife: Courage and Creative Living for Women

Author: Linda N Edelstein

The subject of midlife has been dominated by the woes of aging--menopause, divorce, hormone replacement therapies, aging parents, and fleeing children. Now a broad-ranging new work by clinical psychologist Linda N. Edelstein, Ph.D., The Art of Midlife, describes the freedom and authenticity that can be made a cornerstone of the middle years. She describes three healthy and predictable phases. First, women relinquish old ways, untying themselves from the past and mourning the losses of youth and its illusions. By placing less emphasis on the needs of others, women can live more creatively and enjoy the present. The women Dr. Edelstein studied have been able to move to the next step, in which they reconnect to themselves. They regain their authentic voices, simplify life, and allow long buried aspects of themselves to emerge. Finally, women refocus their futures. With courage, they embrace new people, ideas, activities, and work--and pursue adult dreams regardless of external rewards.

Library Journal

Although much has been written about midlife and the psychological changes that happen with it, most of what is published has focused on studies of men. Edelstein, a clinical psychologist, here focuses exclusively on women. Although somewhat aimed at the self-help crowd, this book is a more serious look at the psychology of midlife and how women have successfully dealt with it. The book is divided into three parts--"Relinquish the Old," "Reconnect to the Self," and "Refocus the Future"--and uses interviews with women who have creatively and happily moved into the second half of their lives by relinquishing, reconnecting, and refocusing. This book will be disappointing to readers looking for a quick fix but will enlighten those interested in learning more about this stage of a woman's life.--Elizabeth Caulfield Felt, Washington State Univ. Lib., Pullman Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Booknews

A clinical psychologist shifts the focus of women's midlife from such horrors as menopause and empty nests to the freedom and authority that is possible. She identifies three healthy and predictable phases: relinquishing and mourning old ways, regaining authentic voices and simplified lives, and refocusing the future to embrace long-buried aspects and new people and goals. The Fiber35 Diet or Behavioral Interventions for Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret

Author: Brenda Watson

Today, Americans eat processed foods from the supermarket, or foods from fast food restaurants we drive by on the way home. We used to eat a fiber-rich diet fresh from the fields (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes), we now eat food from a box; that is, processed food that has processed the fiber right out of our diets. The result: an epidemic of obesity that causes most of the common diseases of our time.

The Fiber35 Diet focuses on the magic of 35 grams of fiber per day as the key nutritional measure for losing weight. This is unlike low-carb, high protein, and low-fat diet books. This diet is based on the only scientifically irrefutable way that is clinically proven to reduce weight—Caloric Restriction. Most important, this book corrects one of the dangerous nutritional falsehoods that most Americans now believe—that carbs are bad. Carbs are an important source of nutrition for us—coming from fruit, vegetables, and other sources.

The Fiber35 Diet provides a weight loss solution that helps you shed pounds and is clinically proven to reduce the risk for all of the contemporary diseases that end life prematurely. Even though much is known about the healthy benefits of fiber, only recently have large food manufacturers, nutrition experts, and the media started paying more attention to it.

Fiber packs a four-part weight loss formula:

1. Fiber curbs your appetite, helping you reduce calories
2. Fiber actually eliminates calories from the food you eat
3. Fiber-rich foods are low-energy density foods.
4. Fiber slows down your body's carbohydrate conversion to sugar, which supports blood glucose stability that helps you lost weight

Behavioral Interventions for Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Author: Sevgi O Aral

Before AIDS, the role of behavioral interventions in preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases was acknowledged in text books and journals but rarely promoted effectively in public health practice. Informed by a comprehensive knowledge of behavioral theory, intervention methods, and affected populations, the authors of this important book examine the central role of behavioral interventions in combating STDs. The book addresses the complexities and social contexts of human behaviors which spread STDs, the cultural barriers to STD education (ranging from conservative mores to "stay out of my bedroom" libertarianism), and the sociopolitical nuances surrounding treatment. Over forty contributors offer a practical appraisal of what is being done now and what can be improved, such as: an overview of current behavioral and biomedical interventions for STD prevention and control, a discussion of what works for individuals, groups, and communities, up to date thinking about such traditional prevention approaches as partner notification and health care seeking, STD prevention strategies with high-risk populations, including drug users, gay men, teenagers, incarcerated persons, and persons with repeat infections, the state of prevention technology: condoms, vaccines, the Internet, ethical, economic, and policy issues in STD prevention, applying intervention models to real-world situations, guidelines for program evaluation and improvement.

As STDs and AIDS remain top priorities for public health and private sector practitioners, researchers, and educators, "Behavioral Interventions for Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases' gives along-neglected field the attention it deserves. This authoritative resource is sure to influence public health practice and policy in an ever-evolving social climate.

Drink Up!: A Recovery Road Less Traveled

Author: Kathleen S

By the age of 56, Kathleen S had tried just about everything to quit drinking. Nothing worked. A binge drinker who felt she was already living on borrowed time (two of her brothers died of addiction-related causes in their 40s), her life and health were rapidly breaking down. Then one day she heard a radio advertisement for a treatment program that promised to take away her cravings forever. Much of the addiction treatment in the United States is based on AA attendance and working a twelve-step program. AA is often looked at by physicians, insurance companies, and especially members themselves as the only legitimate form of recovery from substance abuse. This book describes another program, one that advertises a 72% cure rate. THE LITTLE HOSPITAL THAT COULD "This book says it all. Staying sober has been a piece of cake for me since Schick Shadel." -- Chet "Kathy's description of the treatment is right on, and I should know, being a former patient and 20-year graduate of the program. I laughed and cried along with her, and share her joy in her new, alcohol-free life." -- Pat O'Day, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Broadcaster, concert promoter, businessman "I am glad that one of our patients, Kathleen S, wrote a book about the treatment from the patient's perspective. This book is written factually, with warmth and humor. I hope it will encourage others to give up their addiction and regain their lives again." --James W. Smith, M.D., Chief of Staff, Schick Shadel Hospital

Organ Transplants or Fitness and Wellness

Organ Transplants: A Survival Guide for the Entire Family: The Ultimate Teen Guide

Author: Tina P Schwartz

Unlike any other book, this one talks to teens and offers practical advice and suggestions for coping with and surviving the situation when their parent has an organ transplant, or when they are personally facing an organ transplant. It covers how to deal with events that happen before, during, and after the surgery.

School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-This honest and compassionate resource will help teens cope with the emotional, physical, financial, and planning aspects of the transplant process if it happens to them or to someone in their family. The 13 chapters, written in a question-and-answer format, detail the steps involved from diagnosis and being placed on a waiting list to pre- and post-surgery. Schwartz acknowledges the feelings and emotions that adolescents might be experiencing throughout this process. The author does not sugarcoat the problems of qualifying for transplantations, the seriousness of these surgeries, or possible aftermaths. She weaves the harsh realities with a multitude of heartwarming survivors' stories, including an account of her father's transplant. The well-written text is complemented by a comprehensive section of suggestions for additional information. Average-quality, black-and-white drawings and photos of smiling recipients and donors are scattered throughout. Texts with this breadth of coverage are rare; this book will give young adults hope and courage and let them know that they are not alone.-Carolina Geck, Kean University, Union, NJ Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Escape or Absolute Beginners Guide to a Lite and Healthy Lifestyle

Escape: In Search of the Natural Soul of Canada

Author: Roy Macgregor

We think of the cottage or cabin as a place where we can be our truest, most authentic selves. For those lucky enough to own one, just knowing it awaits can sustain the soul through the workday grind.
In Escape, Roy MacGregor explores the powerful hold the wilderness, and the thought of our place in it, has on our imaginations. He weaves together chapters of personal history, telling of his family’s deep connection to the lakes and forests of central Ontario, and chapters that detail the evolution of the idea of wilderness in Canada and the history of “Cottage Country.” He shows that the Canadian wilderness meant freedom for many early settlers escaping privation and oppression in Europe. It meant a chance to create a paradise on earth to some early Utopians, and it meant a chance to profit from the desperate or gullible, such as at Cannington Manor in Saskatchewan and Brother Twelve’s City of Refuge on Vancouver Island.
In more recent times, the wilderness and the cottage have represented an escape from a technologically driven and hectic civilization – although too often we take the trappings of our urban lives with us to the detriment of our intended refuge. In cottage country, MacGregor suggests, we may be loving our wilderness to death.
This is a thoughtful, evocative, and often moving book about an essential part of the Canadian psyche by one of our best-loved writers.
From the Hardcover edition.

Author Biography: Roy MacGregor’s books of adult non-fiction include the Canadian bestsellers Home Game (with Ken Dryden), The Home Team, shortlisted for the 1996 Governor General’s Award, and A Life in the Bush, which won the prestigious Rutstrum Award as the best book on the wilderness published in North America in 1995-2000. He lives in Kanata, Ontario.

Add 10 Years to Your Life or Hablando de Sexo

Add 10 Years to Your Life

Author: William Campbell Douglass

To add ten years to your life, you need more than just a good doctor. You need to have the right attitude about health and an understanding of the health industry and what it's feeding you. Following the established line on many health issues could make you very sick or worse!Take for instance the cardiologist for the Boston Celtics, Dr. W. Thomas Nessa. At 48, he was the picture of health. He followed the line on nutrition, exercise (he ran the Boston Marathon several times), and medical care. That is, until he dropped dead of a heart attack - the very thing he was trained to prevent.Basically, you've got to take responsibility for your health. In the pages that follow, you'll begin to take the steps necessary to avoid the same fate as Dr. Nessa. And rest assured that, because of the vast amount of misinformation in the health field, we're working hard to provide you with all the "right stuff" to help you live a long, healthy life.Through the years, my newsletters has helped thousands of people achieve dynamic health and what follows is sort of a "best of" my past newsletters. I'm sure you'll find many valuable - and many helpful - items in the pages that follow. We want you to add at least ten years to your life.William Campbell Douglass, MD

Promoting Family Involvement in Long Term Care Settings or Soyfoods Cooking for a Positive Menopause

Promoting Family Involvement in Long-Term Care Settings: A Guide to Programs That Work

Author: Joseph E Gaugler

Put an end to tension-filled interactions between long-term care staff and residents' families with Promoting Family Involvement in Long-Term Care Settings. This innovative new book offers strategies and programs designed to get families involved in formal care settings in constructive, cooperative ways that complement staff and support residents.

Nine intervention strategies are described in detail from inception to evaluation. Designed and implemented in nursing facilities across the United States, these model programs are replicable and will help facilities
* improve residents' quality of life
* increase effective communication with families
* personalize care
* maintain connections between residents and families
* reduce staff stress levels
* boost overall facility morale

Written by the programs' creators and facilitators, each chapter functions as a guide to implementation and includes relevant forms, guidelines, and protocols. Challenges of program implementation are discussed and practical recommendations for overcoming obstacles are provided.

Widely versatile, these nine programs can be successfully implemented in adult day services, assisted living facilities, and long-term residential care settings. Useful for direct care staff, supervisors, and administrators, Promoting Family Involvement in Long-Term Care Settings is an invaluable resource for strengthening current relationships between staff, residents, and family members. The book is also equally beneficial in facilitating residents' transitions to long-term care.

Soyfoods Cooking for a Positive Menopause
